As a parent, you can help your children learn by providing more structure to their study period. Begin by establishing a place for homework. Children need a separate work area that is free from noise and distractions with necessary resources at their fingertips. Small items can be tucked away in a drawer or in a plastic storage bin as long as they are accessible.

Set a Homework Schedule
Then, set a homework schedule for your child and make yourself available during that time. In setting the schedule, do not demand that your children start homework as soon as they return from school. Give them time to shift gears.

Establish your Boundaries
To determine the degree of support you should provide, make sure you talk to the teacher. Ask your child how much time is needed to complete each assignment and what it will take to get started. Some children need help with every assignment; others are able to do most on their own. You need to decide how much you will help or if the child must figure it out alone. Then, whatever schedule you choose, stick to it so your child knows what to expect. Go to FamilyTime Calendar to set your child's homework schedule.

Make Time For Yourself
Have fun while you are helping your child and don't forget to praise. It helps to develop children's self esteem. And don't forget to make time after homework is finished to put your feet up and relax. You need time for self care and a routine that makes you feel energized.
