Marshall's Oyster Casserole

1/4 cup butter
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/2 clove garlic, crushed
12 Saltine crackers, crumbled
2 hard-cooked eggs, sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Dash thyme
1 pint oysters, drained
2 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon cheese, very sharp, grated (optional)
1 can (3 ounces) mushrooms, chopped, with liquid
1 small hot red pepper, finely chopped (optional)

Melt butter in casserole. Add onion, garlic and cracker crumbs. Place in hot oven briefly until crackers are golden and have absorbed butter. Combine eggs, salt, pepper and thyme. Add drained oysters; sprinkle with flour, and mix together well. Add milk, cheese, mushrooms, mushroom liquid and red pepper. Mix thoroughl;, pour onto browned crumbs in casserole. Sprinkle with extra cracker crumbs, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
