3 medium-size apples, tart, peeled, cored, sliced
2 to 3 ripe pears, peeled, cored and sliced
1/3 cup water
2/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Put the sliced apples and pears together with the water in a 2-quart, microwave-safe casserole and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on High (100 percent) for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once halfway through, until the fruit is fork-tender.
Add the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mash with a fork until thoroughly blended. For a very smooth texture, puree the mixture in a blender or food processor.
