1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon soda
Pinch salt

Cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla and egg. Sift flour, soda, and salt together; mix into butter mixture -- the dough will be stiff.

Working with a small amount of dough at a time, roll it out between sheets of floured wax paper until very thin.

Cut into desired shapes and carefully transfer to greased baking sheets. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in 375° oven for 10-12 minutes. Remove from the baking sheets and cool on wire racks.

When completely cool, decorate with colored frosting, dragees, and small candies.
