1 package active dry yeast or 2 tablespoons sugar or 2 teaspoons salt or 3-1/2 cups white flour or 1/2 cup hot water or 3 tablespoons shortening or 1/2 cup brown sugar or 3 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups water, lukewarm

Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup of the lukewarm water. Combine the remaining 1-3/4 cups lukewarm water, sugar, salt, and white flour. Add yeast and beat with mixer until smooth. Let rise until light and bubbly (about 2 hours). Combine hot water, shortening and brown sugar. Cool to lukewarm; add to dough. Beat in whole wheat flour by hand. Knead on floured board; place in greased bowl, cover and let rise until double in size (about 2 hours). Divide into 2 loves and let rest on board for 15 minutes. Shape each loaf in a greased pan, and let rise 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Bake at 325 degree for 45 minutes.
