Banana Nut Bread

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/.2 cups bananas, mashed (about 4 medium bananas)
2 eggs, well-beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 heaping teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup chopped nuts




Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Blend in bananas, eggs, and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to banana mixture alternately with buttermilk, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Add nuts and mix. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 5 x 3-inch pan. Bake for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours. If top becomes brown before bread is done, lower oven temperature to 300 degrees F. and bake until done.
