Homemade Bread

2 cups milk, heated or 1/4 cup sugar or 4 teaspoons salt or 5 tablespoons shortening or 2 yeast cake or 2 cups water, lukewarm or 12 cups flour




Combine milk, sugar, salt and shortening; let cool. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. When milk mixture is lukewarm, combine with yeast mixture. Add 6 cups of the flour, all at once and stir well. Add remaining four, one cup at a time. Dough will be hard to handle. Knead by hand until smooth and elastic. Put into greased bowl, cover and set in warm place. Let rise until double in size (about 1 hour). Punch down, and divide into 4 parts. Shape each part into loaf and put into greased bread pan. Brush tops of loaves with melted butter, and let rise again until double in size (about 1 hour). Bake at 425 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Makes 4 loaves.
