Every woman knows that her skin is affected by what she eats and drinks, how much sleep and exercise she gets, her stress levels, and her genes. Or does she?

Every woman knows that her skin needs to be kept clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun to stay healthful and radiant. Or does she?

All of these things are true. To look as youthful and beautiful as you can, you will want to take care of your skin. There is no denying that age eventually takes its toll, but this does not have to be a bad thing. With first-rate care, wrinkles and sagging can be offset by good skin tone and healthy epidermal tissue. We can’t turn back the clock, but we can make the most of what we have.

The Big Things
The biggest favor you can do for your skin is to protect it from the sun. Everyone needs adequate daily exposure to sunlight, but our skin should always be protected from harmful rays when we venture outside.

Regardless of the season and the cloud cover, apply sunscreen or moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 to your face, neck, and chest — all areas that show signs of aging before others.

Otherwise, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink a lot of water. Limit alcohol and don’t smoke. Exercise regularly, avoid stress, and try to get the right amount of sleep.

Daily Skin Care
You should wash your face daily. Some experts say once a day is enough, if it’s done right. Others suggest twice a day. Everyone warns against overdoing it, which can dry out your skin.

When you wash your face, start by washing your hands. Frequent hand washing helps prevent colds and minor infections but it also makes sense to start with clean fingers and when you cleanse your face.

Remove makeup with a gentle product, concentrating the most on eye makeup.

Splash your face and neck with lukewarm or cool water. If the water is too hot or too cold, you can damage your skin (cause capillaries to break) or at the very least, dry it out.

Rub a small dab of face cleanser (never bar soap) between your fingertips and when it foams, gently rub it onto your face in circular motions. Start at the forehead and work down to the neck. Don’t neglect your browline and the sides of your nose.

Let the cleanser stay on your face for a minute or so before rinsing with splashes of lukewarm water or with a clean, damp cloth. Dry your face and neck with a clean towel and then apply toner.

Not all skin care experts believe in toner — some think it dries out the skin and does no good — but all believe in moisturizer. Dab it on your just-washed skin and very gently work it in.

Extras
Many skin care professionals believe every woman should exfoliate at least once a week. There are many good over-the-counter products for doing this, or you can buy them from a skin care spa. They also recommend at least four professional facials a year, one in every season.

Applying retinoids, such as Retin-A, removes the top layer of dead skin cells and helps generate collagen. Most experts think that retinoids are miracle workers and everyone, especially those of us who are no longer in our twenties, should use them. Talk to a skin care specialist about them.

With just a little common sense and consistent care, your skin will glow with health and radiance. Don't wait another day. Start taking good care of your skin!
