Even if you think making resolutions on January 1 is a waste of time, you will probably feel the urge to do so. This year, be realistic and determine to have some fun. The economic picture may still be bleak, but this does not mean we should not appreciate life's joys.

When it comes to resolutions, sometimes oldies are goodies. You probably have resolved more than once to lose weight, exercise more, relax, live life to the fullest, and have fun.

All of these are admirable goals. Diet and exercise are addressed elsewhere on our site, but what about relaxation, living life more fully, and having more fun?

Relax
First, define what you want from this resolution. Do you want to learn how to relax? Do you want to simplify your life?

If you sit down and figure out ways to adjust your budget, you will feel better. This could be a big step toward a more stress-free existence.

Surf the Web or look in bookstores for information on relaxation techniques. Maybe you would benefit from meditation or yoga.

Surely increasing your weekly exercise time will help you relax. Maybe getting some organization in your life will eliminate stress.

Find Fulfillment
There are other ways to make the next year gratifying. They may not be traditional new year's resolutions, but they may enrich your life. Here are a few ideas:

  • Volunteer for an organization you care about.
  • Spend more time with your kids.
  • Visit an old friend you have not seen in a while.
  • Read a novel.
  • Take an art class.
  • Learn a new hobby.
  • Take a vacation! Even a short, modest one will help.

When you give of your self and your time, when you stretch your mind and your horizons, regardless of your age, and when you spend some time away from the usual routine, your life improves.

Life will always have its ups and downs, sad times, and tribulations, but you can also rejoice in it and make it the best it can be.

Regardless of your resolutions, don't feel guilty if any go by the wayside. You can re-commit to them any day of the year -- or try something different. Happy new year!
