A new baby in the family is sure to make the holidays extra special this year! Nothing brings more joy to the already joyous season than a sweet, tiny face wreathed in smiles.

New mothers love the excitement of the season but no one can deny they also feel the stress. For first-time moms especially, the idea of braving the mall with a stroller, baby bag, strap-on baby carrier, and, oh yes, a baby, leaves many parents slightly panicked.

Survival Tips

Make a comprehensive list with ideas for gifts. Jot down the stores you will visit to get the shopping done most efficiently.

Don't arrive at the mall in the middle of the day, particularly on a weekend. Go early in the morning, preferably on a weekday, to avoid the worst of the crowds.

Take advantage of the late hours many malls and downtown shopping areas have. Leave dad at home with the baby or hire a sitter and hit the stores after supper. Most shoppers clear out after 8 p.m. and so you should have good luck.

Shop At Home

Online shopping is great for new moms. Nap time or evenings are ideal for surfing the Internet.

It helps to know what you want to buy before your start the search. Shop at reputable sites and if possible, take advantage of the gift wrapping services.

Homemade Gifts

A gift from your kitchen is always appreciated. Bake cookies and pack them in decorative tins. Make quick breads or coffee cakes for neighbors and nearby relatives. Spiced vinegars and herbed oils poured into decorative bottles are nice gifts, too.

If you sew or knit, consider simple items such as hats, scarves, or mittens. Don't get too ambitious. Chances are good that as soon as you settle down at the sewing machine or with your knitting needles, the baby will cry!

And for the easiest and perhaps most appreciated gift of all, frame a picture of your adorable baby. Perfect for aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins!
