To End Hunger

A lot of good people are working hard to end the problem of hunger in the USA.

In hometowns across America, families are hungry — and often their neighbors are unaware of it.

Moms, dads, and kids go to bed at night with aching bellies and questions about where their next meal will come from. This is not happening only among the poor, but middle class Americans, too, are suffering from a crisis brought on by the economic downturn and attendant circumstances.

A survey conducted by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) in collaboration with Tyson Foods determined that one in four Americans is worried putting food on the table in the coming year. The same survey also found that large numbers of Americans don’t realize how serious hunger is in their own communities.

“It’s a problem,” they say, “but not in my neighborhood.”

Sadly, they are wrong. Hunger is a problem in every city, town, and hamlet across the country.

The Good News

Any number of good people are working long hours to combat the problem of hunger in America, with the goal of eradicating it altogether.

Tyson Foods is committed to this goal and has teamed with several hunger-relief organizations to reach it. To underscore their involvement, in 2011 the company launched a campaign called KNOW Hunger.

What is more, Tyson Food clearly puts its money where its mouth is: since the KNOW Hunger program was initiated early in 2011, the company has donated almost four million pounds of protein to food banks across the U.S.

This is nothing new for Tyson Foods. It has long and ongoing partnerships with three other hunger-relief organizations, in addition to FRAC: Share Our Strength (SOS); Lift Up America; and Feeding America.

A Lot of Chicken

Protein is a necessary nutrient for good health. Growing kids absolutely need enough to develop normally and so Tyson Foods has made it a priority to supply food banks with chicken, an excellent source of protein that everyone likes.

In conjunction with SOS, since 2000, Tyson Foods donated 85 million pounds of protein to hundreds of food banks, food pantries, and relief agencies in 48 states.

Working with Lift Up America, Tyson Foods joined sports teams around the country to fight hunger. Since 2003, it has made numerous protein donations to food banks in the Lift Up America network. Among the professional teams that have worked alongside Tyson Foods as part of LUA are the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Denver Nuggets, and the Cleveland Indians.

In 2006, Tyson Foods established a national partnership with Feeding America. At the time, the company committed to donating 10 million pounds of protein to the network’s member food banks over a three-year period. All 10 million pounds were donated in the first two years!

Going Forward

By the end of 2010, Tyson Foods had donated enough chicken to have served a meal to every American in every state. But of course the company’s commitment did not stop in 2010. Tyson Foods and KNOW Hunger continue to make protein donations as they increase efforts to raise awareness about the very real problem of hunger in America.

Tyson wants to end hunger in the United States — the mission of KNOW Hunger.  The company intends to expand its involvement by engaging customers and consumers, communities, and everyone who cares about their fellow citizens.

The folks at Tyson Food believe that no one should lack for enough food or proper nutrition in this great country of ours.
