3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled, quartered, and sliced wafer thin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups Gruyere cheese, shredded
14 ounces chicken broth
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Grease a 9 by 13-inch baking dish. Gently toss potatoes with salt pepper, and nutmeg. Layer one-third of potatoes in prepared dish. Sprinkle with one-third of cheese. Repeat layers. Cover potatoes with chicken broth. Dot with butter. Bake, uncovered 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees. Bake 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until top is golden and crusty. Serve immediately.
