1/2 cup shortening
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup molasses
1 egg
3 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ginger
1 tespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
currants, or raisins (optional)

Cream shortening and sugar; blend in molasses and egg. Combine flour, soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves; sift into molasses mixture. Mix dough until smooth. (Dough will be stiff.) Chill dough before rolling. Roll out dough 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch thick on lightly floured board. Cut with floured gingerbread boy cutter. Carefully place cut-out boys on lightly greased baking sheet.
