Tamale Casserole

1 cup onion, minced
3/4 cup green pepper, diced
1/2 pound ground beef
1 can (12 ounces) whole kernel corn
1/3 cup ripe olives, sliced (reserve liquid)
1 1/2 cups tomato sauce
1-1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
2 cans (15 ounces each) tamales
1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese

In large skillet, brown sausage. Remove sausage and drain. Spoon out all but 3 tablespoons drippings from skillet. Add onion and green pepper; saute until tender. Stir in ground beef and cook until browned. Drain corn; reserve liquid, and sausage to skillet. Mix in tomato sauce, salt, chili powder and garlic salt. Simmer gently for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, drain tamales; add 1/3 cup tamale liquid to meat mixture. Remove wrappings from tamales, slice tamales in half, lengthwise. Spoon meat mixture into large, shallow casserole and arrange tamales on top. Bake, uncovered, in 350 degree oven for 15 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese and return to oven until cheese is melted, about 20 more minutes.
