Indian Lamb Stew

1 1/2 pounds lamb sirloin, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 cup plain yogurt
1 tablespoon garlic, finely minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 pepper
3 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup onion, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
2 tablespoons curry powder
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted
6-12 tablespoons chutney
3 cups cooked rice

Combine yogurt, garlic, salt and pepper. Place lamb cubes in shallow pan and pour yogurt mixture over lamb. Cover and marinate 2-4 hours, turning lamb once or twice during marinating period. Melt butter in heavy skillet. Add onion and cook, stirring constantly until onion starts to brown. Add spices and raisins and cook over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add yogurt and lamb mixture. Cover and simmer 1-1½ hours or until tender. Serve over rice and top with one to two tablespoons chutney per serving and almonds.
