Teriyaki Skewers

8 ounces boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 20)
20 whole pitted dates
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/8 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon chives, minced
1/8 teaspoon grated orange zest

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. or prepare a charcoal or gas grill. Combine chicken cubes and dates with teriyaki marinade, brown sugar, olive oil and pepper. Refrigerate for 3 or 4 hours for flavor to develop.
Skewer one chicken cube and one date onto ovenproof appetizer picks or wooden skewers that have been soaked in cold water for about 30 minutes. Arrange in a shallow pan or set on the grill and bake or grill for 7 to 9 minutes or just until chicken is cooked through.
Sprinkle skewers with chives, orange peel and/or sesame seeds and serve.
