8 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup natural unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 small apple, grated
1/4 cup chopped pecans
confectioners' sugar

Put the butter and chocolate in a large glass bowl. Microwave on High (100 percent) for 2 to 3 minutes or until melted. Cool slightly. Stir in the brown sugar, applesauce, eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon in a small bowl. Gradually stir the flour mixture into the chocolate mixture until smooth. Stir in the apple and pecans.

Pour the mixture into a buttered, 8-inch round glass baking dish. Place an inverted glass pie plate in the oven and set the baking dish on top. Microwave on Medium (50 percent), rotating the dish twice, for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges just pull away from the dish. Let stand for 5 minutes.

Cool the brownies on a wire rack. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar and cut into wedges before serving.
