Baked Pears

1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
1 cup water
1 whole clove
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup orange or lemon marmalade
4 large, firm, ripe Bosc or Anjou pears
1 teaspoon unsalted butter or margarine




Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Combine the sugar, water and spices in a saucepan over moderate heat. Bring to the boil and cook until the sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the marmalade. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, peel the pears, halve them lengthwise and core. Slice crosswise into 1/4-inch slices.

Butter a baking dish large enough to hold the slices in a single layer, overlapping slightly. Pour the syrup over the pears and bake for 15 minutes.
