Cherry Good Cobbler

2 (twenty-one ounce) cans cherry pie filling
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1 tablespoon slivered almonds, coarsely chopped, (for topping)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar, (for topping)
1 teaspoon grated orange zest, (for topping)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, (for toppping)




Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine cherry filling and almond extract. Smooth into an ungreased 8-x 8-x 2-inch baking pan.

Combine the flour, sugar and baking powder in a large mixing bowl and mix well. Add the orange juice, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Drop the batter by tablespoonfuls over cherry filling, making at least 8 dumplings.

For topping: Combine the almonds, sugar, orange zest and cinnamon in a small bowl and mix well. Sprinkle over the dumplings.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and dumplings are brown.
