West Coast Broiled Flank Steak

1 flank steak, about 1 1/2 pounds
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 tsp. fresh Grated lemon peel
1/2 cup fresh squeezed Lemon juice
2 Tbs. sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp. oregano, crushed
1/8 tsp. coarse black pepper
2 Tbs. soy sauce
1 Tbs. butter

Trim any fat or membrane from steak. With knife, score steak 1/8 inch deep on both sides in diamond design. Layer half of onions in plastic bag or glass dish. Place steak on top of onions. Marinate 2 to 3 hours or overnight in refrigerator, turning several times. Remove steak from marinade; wipe partially dry with paper towel. Drain onions and reserve. Place steak on cold broiler pan, 3 to 5 inches from source of heat in preheated broiler. Broil 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Meanwhile, saute onions in butter until soft. To serve, cut steak across grain in very thin slices; top with onions.
